2011 ARRL Straight Key Night

01/04/2011 | W3DF

For the first time I was able to put my vintage station of the air during SKN.  A DX-40 (crystal controlled), a Hammarlund HQ-170 and my trusty J-38.  New years eve and new years day were filled with family activities but I was able to make six contacts, two in the first hours of 2011 and the other four later that morning before I had to head out to another family gathering.

New years morning at 0652 UTC AC3F, whom I had not talked to in 36 years, answered my 80M CQ.  Needless to say this QSO gets my vote for most interesting QSO.  We did 36 years worth of catching up.  John KB8PGW gets my vote for best fist.  My last SKN QSO was a three way with Ed N6LYJ and Pete K0CVN on 40M.   The smell of hot tubes filled the shack and using the old gear brought back memories of my novice days and the thrill of working a distant station with low power and a simple antenna.  How spoiled we are today with computerized rigs and spotting networks and monster antenna arrays.  CU next year on SKN.
