2011 ARRL International DX Contest (Phone)

03/09/2011 | W7VO

This was my first effort as a SOSB (15), and it was a blast. All hail the power of the sunspot!

The bad thing is that I think I left a lot of contacts on the table by not running any JAs on Friday night, and I just could not break the east coast pileup for Guantanamo Bay, KG4AN for the additional mult.

15M openings to EU were pretty consistent for about 3-4 hours starting at about 9AM local on both days, but I did not get serious about collecting EU mults until Sunday AM. I only had one short run going to EU Sunday morning until I got chased away by QRM. It was hard to find any spots to run 15 until the Big Gun East Coasters went away late in the afternoon. The closer I got to 100 mults the harder I worked to find them, but in the end the contest was just not long enough!

Still, was a very fun weekend, and  I really liked only having to be on during daylight hours (the band opened at about 7AM and closed down by 6PM each night...). I worked the CQWW 160 SSB contest the weekend before, and two nights of "all nighters" wore me out.

Congratulations to Gary, K7XO up in Spokane who clobbered me in the Pacific Northwest SOSB (15) "competition". What a score! (552 QSOs by 98 mults). The old dogs still have it. ;-)
