2011 ARRL June VHF Contest
My brother (K2FR) and I hiked Mt. Beacon in Beacon, NY (FN31AL) so we could operate mountaintop portable for a couple hours on Saturday afternoon. The hike up took us a bit longer than expected, so we didn't start operating until almost 2:30PM Eastern. We were able to operate for an hour and a half and then had to pack up at 4PM because of rain coming in. I manned the radio most of the time and my brother did the logging, antenna rotating, picture taking, and videography.
Most of our contacts were on 6M with our longest contact to EL99 - 1000 miles! Operating from the top of a mountain with a beautiful view was a lot of fun and very rewarding. We would've liked to operate longer, but the weather was not cooperating.
My brother put together a YouTube vide of our mountaintop contesting adventure. We hope you enjoy it!
