2011 ARRL Field Day

06/27/2011 | W5LL

What started off as a sub par field day really turned out great with a big 10m opening on Saturday.  First, the normal crew I go out with couldn't make it this year so I was on my own.  Decided to run 1B - Battery and setup at a local lake.  Texas is known for 100F+ temps during Field Days and this one was no exception.  However, the wind blew constantly and setting in the shade made the heat bearable.  I strung up a 40m delta loop and had a 102" stainless steel whip that I trimmed down for 10m use mounted on the back of my truck.  Ended up with 306 contacts in the log in a little over 4 hours of total operating time.  I wasn't able to operate the whole FD as I had other commitments.  A few things I learned.  My LDG Electronics Z100 tuner had no problems matching my 40m delta loop on 15m and 10m.  I know its not very efficient but I was still able to make contacts.  My rig was a FT-897D running 5 watts.
