2011 ARRL Field Day
As always Field Day 2011 was a great event. My only frustration remains the Field Day message. Field Day is understandably a difficult time to pass traffic. Signal conditions are variable and QRM is usually high. Yet the most common problem is often that the bulletin is read at near conversational speed, as it was on Friday night. The Field Day message should be a good example of proper message passing technique under difficult conditions. Instead it's often a speed writing contest. We often have visitors at the site who could easily participate in copying the message if passed properly at a reasonable rate. Thankfully, Saturday must have been a little better than Friday night, because one of our operators was able to copy much of it, and we filled in the blanks later.
We typically get the message via digital or CW, because phone has been so problematic. I will say that about two years ago the person reading the bulletin did an outstanding job, and mulitple operators got the message on the very first try. Sending traffic is supposed to be about making it easy for the person copying and to ensure accuracy. Let's make that a goal for next year, and show off what we can do. Not how fast we can write.
Other than that, a fantasitc contest as always.
