2011 ARRL Field Day

07/25/2011 | KD4RF

This was the very first Field Day operation of the RF Micro Devices Amateur Radio Club. We set up in the back parking lot of the RFMD Headquarters building in Greensboro, North Carolina, running emergency power from a generator. We activated two HF stations, one on CW and one on SSB, plus a satellite station that allowed us to work several FO-29 and VO-52 passes.   The operation went uneventful, and we all had a great time. We only operated on Saturday until very late. We were visited by many people, including some youngsters that enjoyed operating SSB for their very first amateur radio exposure.   We sent out an internal invitation to take part of Field Day within the company, which stirred some interest and some hams that had been inactive for a long time stopped by and did some operating. The announcement also helped us discover a few other hams that we were not aware of among the approximately 1500 people that RFMD employs in the 7 buildings it occupies in Greensboro.   We will definitely take part of Field Day again next year, maybe with longer operating time and some more equipment and antennas.
