2011 ARRL November Sweepstakes (CW)

11/07/2011 | WA2GBF

All in all, another great CWSS.  This year was not my best for the SS, as the snowstorm of the previous weekend had dumped 16 inches of snow on the QTH and had brought down a great many trees and branches, as well as power for a couple of days.

Due to a busy work schedule, I didn't get to check out my gear for the TEST until Saturday.  First thing I noticed was an extreme SWR on the main antenna, a 40 Meter horizontal loop.  Going out to investigate, I found that one end of it was on the ground, and more of it was wrapped around numerous branches and shrubs at the 3 foot off the ground level(when I put it up, it was ABOVE the bushes, honest).  After effecting some field repairs, I checked out the Bilal Isotrons for 80 and 40, and found that they came through unscathed (and they did their usual great job for me).  After the antenna work, I started getting the rig and computer up and ready, when our power went down again, just to make my preps more interesting.

After all that, I got to operate much of the contest, although not as prepared as I would have liked.  Conditions seemed to be the best I have seen in several years, and I really enjoyed having all bands 80 - 10 to operate with.  There were even some periods when all 5 HF bands were open for me at the same time, so I could concentrate on chasing mults.  Even though I didn't get to work them all, I heard all sections, with the exception of PAC, AK and Newfie this year.  As usual, I encountered many very courteous ops out there.

Even with the drawbacks mentioned, I really enjoyed this year's CWSS.  Thanks guys.
