2011 ARRL 160 Meter Contest

12/05/2011 | N0NB

I ended up with 129/45 after not even starting until early Saturday evening. I did S&P for about an hour and then skipped an hour, then went back to it for about 45 mins. Around 2:45 this morning I worked another hour but there weren't too many stations to be found. I went back to bed and awoke around 6:30 (1230z) and worked up the band and had 98 in the log. So I decided to run and see what happened. It took a little bit and worked several stations. Then that seemed to play out as I was near 1850 and no one else was close any more so I jumped down to around 1810 and worked some more. I think I worked everyone in Minnesota during that run! I kept calling until 1400z but no answers for the last 20 mins. The band was getting short quickly after about 1300z.

I did work BC, WWA, NV, UT, and AZ west of the Rockies along with NM, CO, and WY, but no CA sections. I tried to work a station in ORG but couldn't even get him to stop calling CQ. I did hear ZF2AH and at least got him to send ? a few times early Saturday evening, other than VE, no DX.

The band wasn't as long as last year and we'll have to wait for the solar minima to have 160 shine like it has the past few years. Still, it's great to have the upper bands open, so I can wait. This is one of my favorite events on the calendar. I guess the challenge of 160m and the quality of the operators does it for me.
