2012 ARRL Straight Key Night

01/01/2012 | KI5JF

This station began life as the 1969 Novice rig with just the 20W 6AG7 oscillator. It was initially paired with a Heath HR-10B receiver. Later the 6AG7 was boosted to 75W with the addition of a 1625 PA and then later “modernized” with a 6146.   The HR-10B was eventually replaced with the much better performing Heath SB-310.   After upgrading to General class the VFO was built to replace crystals. It initially used 2N2222’s but was a bit drifty so was later modernized with an MPF-102 oscillator.   This VFO can drive either of the transmitters. The ARC-5 was recovered as junk from a swapmeet and was built from the ground up with a 6AG7 driving 2- 1625’s and was pushed to 100Watts back when tubes were plentiful but now is given more TLC. The Navy Flame-proof key was a gift from W5MMO in 1969 when I received my Novice license (WN5ZOA) and I owe him much for his generosity and patience helping this farm-boy get his start in electronics.

Thanks for hanging in there for a contact from the vintage station 73 - Nelson
