2012 ARRL Straight Key Night
SKN is a great way to bring in the New Year. Having recently moved from Nevada to northern California, I had to dig out the 75A-4 and Viking II which were buried under numerous moving boxes.
The tubes were still in their sockets, so the rigs were fired up and ready for action early in the evening. After watching the ball fall in Times Square via the magic of television, I moved to the unheated garage for a couple of hours of SKN fun.
I only made four contacts, but all were high quality ragchews with K7FD, AF7ZL, and W6KN on 80M. I then moved to 40M for a 45 minute QSO with geologist, Roy, K6GVG in San Diego who was running a Swan Cygnet.
After signing out with Roy, I heard a weak Hawaiian station calling "CQ" but it was just too cold in the shack and I retired to the house to welcome the New Year in heated surroundings.
