2012 ARRL Straight Key Night

01/02/2012 | N8KC

Well... another SKN come and gone. I enjoyed this one as much or more than any other though I always seem to find myself wishing I'd had more time to operate (I was at a party from 0000-0600).  Once again, I dusted off my Nye-Viking Master key, a gift from my son from the time when he and I were locked in a race to upgrade... it's not that I don't use it, I simply use my iambic paddles more often.  My eleven QSOs certainly won't break any records, but none were of the typical cookie-cutter type, and only two were prematurely ended due to QSB.  I made an effort to work ALL of our HF bands this year, but was unable to call up anyone on 12 and 17 meters. Although I only worked 11 stations, three were excellent  fists... Ann (KE6OIO), Barry (NF1O op'ing as K3Y/1) and Phil (N1EP).  My vote for "best fist" went to Phil (N1EP) on his J5 Bunnell key.  Honorable mention also goes to my QSO with Ed (KM4LT) who was out working SKN as he's done every year.  He and I have worked many times since I was a Novice, always CW, and he's likely partly responsible for my upgrades over the years.  Good to hear he's still radio-active!!
