2012 ARRL January VHF Sweepstakes

01/24/2012 | N5XTR

My YL asks, "How is the contest going?"

I replied, "It sure is NOT like last June."

Saturday was a beautiful day in west Texas, 75 degrees and sunny.  Six meters started to show a few E's after an hour or so.  The conditions did not last long and there seemed to be a shortage of VHF operators, possible due to the NaQP.   Managed to log 68 stations from the east coast by the days end.

Sunday was another story.  The weather turned south with 65 degrees and a strong west wind of 40 mph gusting to 65 mph.  Blowing dirt and sand kept the noise levels high and tested my antenna mast that failed after the June 2010 VHF test.  Six meters opened again to the west this time and I managed to get the log up to 99 QSO's before the sandstorm stopped.   The band conditions fell out after 4pm just as the wind ceased.

I had a great time and now I have a few elements to straighten out before June.
