2012 ARRL January VHF Sweepstakes
Well this was another challenging rover trip, working in Ohio the week before the contest and flying out of Austin, TX. Radio gear was in Houston, EL29. Was trying to beat a snow storm home that was estimated to hit Chicago about the time of my flight connection..... Oh the joys of travel and work getting in the way of a good contest.
When it was all said and done, adding an extra 400 miles to the rover trip to get home from temporary work assignment and get the gear. We ended up with 8 grids activated in South Texas.
Score could have been better had I not compressed the antenna stack under a tree in a park at the start of the rover trip. Yes, I will remember NOT to use that park again.....The tree always wins compared to aluminum.
Thanks to a few band opennings, I was able to grab a few new grids. It was a great trip, the daughter and I had some quality time. She talks to me enough to keep me awake and from driving, writing and band switching on the run. (She made me pull over, and refused to log) Activated two grids that I normally to not get into, gave a fair number of contacts from EL28, a rare grid for VHF work if it was not for some rovers.
Think I will try WSJT modes in June and head to Corpus area, that was my plan for this past June, but work got in the way of that trip......
Dreaming of long stacked beams and towers.....Someday I'll get a house where I can install antennas and work from a home QTH!
