2012 ARRL School Club Roundup - February
W5KS, a Memorial Station for the Lawton Fort Sill Amateur Radio Club was pressed into service on Friday February 17th 2012, of the School Club Round-up for about 3 hours at the Eisenhower Elementary School. In all, about 130 students from the 3rd, 4th and 5th grades marched into the gym/cafeteria and promptly sat on the floor. An HF radio was deliberately loud enough to cause a distraction – with plenty of young voices being heard on the radio, just like theirs, except they were participating in the SCR.
This quickly organized event gave these students a chance to experience amateur radio for the 1st time. The students learned a little history about amateur radio and the important role that amateur radio continues to provide the community and the nation. Nearly every student was eager to give it a try, but only a few students got a chance to talk to other schools around the country.
Next year maybe we can plan to be better organized and have an opportunity to get more students on the air.
Catch you in the fall 2012!
