2012 ARRL School Club Roundup - February
ON4HTI or O-N-4-Higher-Technical-Institute as we like to call it, is situated in the city of Ostend in Belgium.
We are one of the very few school stations from Europe, participating in the SCR, if not the only one.
Still it's always great fun ... and even funnier if we say that we ended up in the first place in our category ... and the LAST place too ! (DX Colleges & Universities)
We are a small school club of about 25 members, of which 10 are students, and the rest are alumni supporting us with a contribution, which helps to pay for the radio tax. Nothing is free in Belgium ! :-(
Unfortunately we cannot let unlicensed students operate the radio during SCR, as the US schools can.
Therefore , most of the operating is done by volunteer operators from the local radio club, and myself. The other members help with the logging, or just enjoy "being there" when there is a pile-up or so.
Our HF equipment comprises a Kenwood TS-450S, and antenna's are a 3 element yagi for 10/15/20, inverted V for 40m and an end-fed halwave wire for 80m.
We also have VHF, UHF, and Echolink is always on when the shack is open.
Despite the bad propagation, after almost 19 hours of operation, we ended up with 188 QSO's and a score of 15840 points. We contacted 11 states, 1 province, 37 DX, 3 clubs and alas ... only 1 (ONE !) school club ...
We had great fun, and more important, attracted quite some visitors which migth have been inspired to explore this fascinating hobby.
Hope to catch some more schools in the next edition, come and give us a call !
