2012 ARRL Field Day

06/25/2012 | N2DM

ARRL FD 2012, is in the log. Seems like it goes by so quickley, after waiting so long for the weekend to arrive.

Enjoyed running 5 watts, very rewarding the QSO's using low power. Ran 3 different rigs(each individually) to compare against each other. FT-817D, FT-857D and Small Wonders Lab SW-40+. The Yaesu rigs both have the 500 Hz cw filter installed. My favorite was the FT-817, low power consumption, multi-band, and good receiver using the cw filter. The 817 operated for 5 hours using a 6 AH gell cell battery. 2nd place was the SW-40+, great receiver and the TX cut through qrm even at 1 watt. The FT-857 is good rig, but is power hungry on 5w, draws 2 amps,  and RX just doesn't have the pizazz of the 817.

Used end fed 80 ft wire for antenna, at 25 ft height, with LDG Z-11 pro tuner. Really makes it easy for set up and getting on the air.

I thought band propagation was good this year, and the weather was outstanding in Southern tier of Western New York. Thanks to all for picking out my signals. 73, Dale, N2DM, Arkport, NY field day site.
