2012 ARRL 160 Meter Contest
Planned on a very casual operation this year but that all changed early Sunday morning when I realized 100,000 points was within reach using my small station. Wound up with 690 total contacts and 78 multipliers (74 ARRL sections and 4 DX stations) for a total claimed score of 108,576.
TX antenna was a 68 foot base loaded vertical wire hanging straight down from a very tall Sycamore tree with 55 short buried ground radials (2500 feet of radials). Ran 100 watts output using my old Kenwood TS-180s using a 500 hertz receive filter. Like last year my best DX was CE1/K7CA, and I'm amazed how well he hears.
Total operating time was 21.2 hours (slept some the first night, but then started to salivate over the 100,000 point mark and went sleepless the second night).
My 3 small point fed receive pennants (51.6% of full size) proved invaluable the first night when some local power line noise appeared out of nowhere. The power line noise was nonexistent on my West and South pointing pennants, and this really saved the day.
Great contest, and already looking forward to next year.
