2013 ARRL Straight Key Night

01/02/2013 | K9VKY

As always, SKN is a wonderful time to step back into those thrilling days of yesteryear.  After letting the smoke out of the stalwart PRC-1 Spy Radio last year,  the set mustered for another SKN along with the able Collins Twins celebrating their 60th anniversary.  Keys used were in memory of previous owners who are now SK.  The Titanic replica for W3TZW, and the J-38 for W9FUF did yeoman service just as their former brasspounding owners did.

Working only about a dozen stations this year, the contacts were all good, and the antithesis to the hello and good-bye fare so common these days.  Four of the twelve went over an hour long discussing favorite topics of vintage radio equipment, keys, and bugs.  More operators than not dusted off their old glow-in-the-dark radios which was is a refreshing trend, too. G3PLE, of the Lizard Point Marconi Station in Cornwall, England, was the only DX worked, and hopes are we'll hear more of friends from overseas as the word spreads about SKN.

Thanks to all for the memorable contacts, and here's hoping we meet again soon to carry on.  Cheers.  Brian  K9VKY
