2013 ARRL Straight Key Night

01/03/2013 | KC7YE

Only worked two , same as last year. KE7LKW in White Salmon WA, Columbia river gourge is always a tough slog from NW corner of state but we made it. K6KPH, old RCA high seas coastal station at Pt Reyes CA is special for me. I copied the marine WX from them and the USCG stn near there back in early 50's, thats how I learned code. Could check copy against WX in SF Chronicle next day. Sat in front of the big Zenith in front room. Toured KPH with local ham club in '53 or '54, Quite a trip before freeways, 75 miles and 13 or 14. Heady stuff.

Rig was IC 718 and Buddistick tuned for 80 mtrs stuck out window of condo and counterpoise snaked around condo. Key was J-38 that I picked up to use as part of B - 25D radio position display for Historic Flight Foundation's (Paine Field WA )"Grumpy", oldest flying B - 25 in world. Radios weigh close to 300 lbs so will not be installing .
