2013 ARRL Straight Key Night
Last year I made myself a promise to work SKN 2013 using my Drake Twins. I finally got measureable power output from the T-4XB 1 day before the start of SKN. I used a Bunnell Navy Fireproof key I bought just for the ocassion. It was a bit springy but I eventually got used to it. What a great time, tubes glowing in the night, CW ringing out like a bell, even the heat from the rig remided me of my first qso's some 49 years ago. I worked sixten stations, some qso's lasting nearly thirty minutes. Once we started talking about the stations we were running, we just jabber on and on. My second contact, Bill K6IFF was running the same rig and key as me! Go figure. It took a while, but I evenualy re-learned how to manuver the Drake R-4B's conrols enough to select the signal I was copying out of the throng of participants around 7.050MHz. I found it much more of a challenge using 'wetware' to decipher the overlapping signals than using the sophisticated hardware/software solution my K3/SDR-IQ setup provides. Which is better? ..Mikey likes them both! See you next year! 73 ..mike
