2013 ARRL 10 GHz and Up Contest

09/12/2013 | KA1ZD

As usual, KA1ZD was operated by Linda, KA1ZD and Dave, K1ZZ. This year we could only participate the first weekend; we spent it on Cape Cod. Our initial QSOs Saturday morning were with Dale, AF1T and Mickey, W1MKY on Block Island from Sea Street Beach in Dennis Port, adjacent to our motel. Dale told us we had just missed a good opportunity to work Owen, K3CB so we decided to get up earlier on Sunday and at 7 AM local time -- with some help from Dale on 2 meter liaison -- were rewarded with a QSO with Owen, our best ever DX at 609 km.

The Dennis Port location is great for working down the coast but isn't much good for anything else. Saturday afternoon we joined W1LE and N1GJ near Provincetown and had good luck. Sunday we had even better luck from First Encounter Beach in Eastham, making 20 QSOs with 20 different stations in less than two hours including K2TXB and WA3GFZ in Delaware, again with some liaison help from Dale.

Our 10 GHz station runs 2 watts to a 2-foot dish. Thanks to the microwave ops for being such a friendly, supportive bunch.
