2013 ARRL School Club Roundup - October

11/04/2013 | W9GRS

We entered our 6th year in the School Club Round Up with a new group of students.  We kicked things off with our weekly Science Club meeting on Tuesday with 34 students showing up.  School sponsor and 8th grade science teacher, Troy J. Simpson (W9KVR), demonstrated various modes of communication utilizing the Smart-Interactive Board to show digital modes including PSK and SSTV.  Students took turns on phone as they chatted with 11 different schools during that day.  A highlight that day was also being able to contact fellow "9-Landers" K9SOU and NQ9P!  We experienced a rare short skip on 20m and were able to make the voice QSO.  It made for great discussion of how waves propogate and how thoses waves are effected.

The highlight for me personally was having my 1st grade daughter, Sophie, join us on Friday after school.  After a little bit of coaching she made her first ever voice contact.  She made her call and when she heard K4DMS return, her face lite up with a big grin.  She answered with a signal report and then chatted with Megan for a short bit.  What an experience and privilege for me to witness her first contact during SCR!  She ended up making several contacts both on voice and PSK31 and I'm definitely looking forward to the upcoming years of SCR with her possibly at the radio!
