2014 ARRL January VHF Contest

01/23/2014 | KC2TA

We hams are intelligent human beings, so why can't we READ INSTRUCTIONS?  Been trying for three days to get a post up and found out why things weren't working the way they should by reading the first few lines at the top of the instructions.

Had nothing built for 6 or 2 meters, but finally finished them up Thursday evening before the contest.  Unfortunately, I still needed to build something to get them and the 70cm yagi into the air.  Spent the better part of the day Friday running ideas through my mind while at work.  It hit me when I got home that I'd just need a few 2 x 3's and some screws to put up the skyhooks temporarily.

With the help of my son (who can be seen on the roof in one of the pics) we built the tower, attached the antennas, erected the beast and ran the feed lines before it got too cold to work.  Please notice there is no rotor anywhere to be seen -- it (I) was taking the pictures.

After all the work and hoopla to get things up and operational, I was saddened that there WAS NO PROPAGATION on the bands.  Well, at least the rotor didn't freeze -- well I did get a bit cold on Sunday evening / night running up the stairs and out of the house to turn the array, then back in and down the stairs to "work up the bands".  Then, get a call from a station off the side that wanted to "fill out the three" bands if I had them.  I just couldn't say NO.

I'll be on in June and September, but will be trying my best to have a tower and rotor up on the roof of the house and won't have to run around like I did.
