2016 ARRL Straight Key Night
I enjoyed the 2016 SKN event. It was nice to meet so many nice, interesting guys sharing the CW tradition.....many nice fists, great stories from our past. I enjoy the various characteristics and sounds of the vintage radio gear. I worked all 40 meters this year. New Year's Eve seemed to start slowly.....the activity seemed low and the band was noisy with no long skip detected here....no W6 or W7's. New Years Day was much more active, plenty of strong signals, pile-ups and competition. I operated to the last moments of the event making 35 QSO's in 17 states and VO1NA in Newfoundland. OH was well represented with 9 QSO's. The rig was a Kenwood TS570, a MFJ-962D antenna tuner and a CF Zepp fed with 450 ohm ladder line. I used two of my favorite keys from my collection of 75 more or less keys. I prefer the long armed Danish manufactured AMPLIDAN keys made for the shipping/marine radio services of years past. The long arm with the extra leverage allows for smooth sending. The Amplidan's are getting hard to find. I have the two adjuster and the harder to find single adjuster versions. I will be looking forward to participating in next years SKN. 73 and DX to all.
