Highlights of Activity -- January to July 2001:

  1. The Council agreed on an approach for presenting recommended connector standards to JAIA. The standards should be presented in time for the August 2001 JAIA meeting.
  2. Industry is interested in emerging technologies for Amateur Radio, but is not yet ready to adopt standards, (e.g., Software Defined Radios)
  3. Industry maintains high interest in a partnership with ARRL for recruitment of new Radio Amateurs. Radio Shack plans to include ham radio material in the packaging of scanners and short-wave radios

Teleconference July 10, 2001

  1. The ARRL Industry Advisory Council met via teleconference on July 10, 2001. In attendance were Chairman Art Goddard, W6XD; Bob Brunkow, K7NHE, Icom; Martin Jue, K5FLU, MFJ; Chip Margelli, K7JA, Yaesu; Scott Robins, W4PA, Ten-Tec; Wayne Wilson, WR5S, Radio Shack; and Dave Patton, NT1N, ARRL. Also in attendance at the invitation of the Chairman was Joel Harrison, W5ZN, ARRL First Vice President. Paul Middleton KD6NUH, Kenwood and Dave Sumner, K1ZZ, ARRL CEO were unable to participate due to last-minute conflicts.
  2. The teleconference was called to order at 1:00PM EDT.
  3. New IAC member Wayne Wilson, WR5S, was welcomed to the Council. Wayne replaces Bob Miller, K2RM, who retired from Radio Shack at the end of 2000.
  4. Agenda Item 1 - Equipment Connector Standards: The issue of approaching JAIA with the IAC's proposed power and microphone connector standards was discussed. It was agreed that ARRL Headquarters would document and submit the proposed standards to JAIA, on behalf of the IAC, which includes representatives of the major equipment manufacturers. This approach combines the objectivity of ARRL with the support of a broad industry base. It was pointed out that JAIA's next meeting is in August, so that our proposed standards should be received at JAIA by the third week of July to be included on their agenda.
  5. Agenda Item 2 -- Emerging Technologies: Joel Harrison provided a summary of areas being pursued by the ARRL's Technology Task Force (TTF). The current areas of focus are Digital Voice, High-speed Digital Networks and Software Defined Radios (SDR). The attached diagram was provided by Art Goddard to support further discussion of SDR. The Amateur Radio industry is watching developments carefully, but is not ready to adopt standards for SDR at this time. Industry is concerned with the potential mis-uses of SDR -- we need to maintain Amateur Radio's "Good Guy" image with the FCC. Industry reps mentioned that Amateur Radio equipment benefits from commonality with other radio business segments such as marine electronics and avionics. Interested ARRL committees are encouraged to maintain awareness of activities of related industry associations such as National Marine Electronics Association ( www.nmea.org ), Radio Technical Commission for Aeronautics ( www.rtca.org ) and Aircraft Electronics Association ( www.aea.net ). A report of new technology activities will be provided to the IAC members following the July Board meeting.
  6. Agenda Item 3 -- Industry Interests, Concerns & Issues: Industry reps encourage the ARRL to continue to maintain and update on-line recruitment of prospective new hams. Particular interest is in currency of local club contacts and "hot-button people". Additional QST articles on the theme of "You can do this!" are encouraged. Industry reps expressed a desire for increased awareness that the barriers to entry into Amateur Radio are reduced. Dave Patton gave a summary of prospects for Morse decisions at WRC-2003. Radio Shack is planning to include a flyer on Amateur Radio in their scanner and short-wave receiver packaging. A draft of the flyer will be sent to Art Goddard. MFJ already includes ARRL-provided flyers in their equipment packaging.
  7. Agenda Item 4 -- IAC Structure: The possible inclusion of other segments of the Amateur Radio industry was discussed. All members agreed that future Council communications and coordination of teleconference meetings should be handled via e-mail. ARRL will establish an IAC reflector to accomplish this objective.
  8. The teleconference was adjourned at 2:15PM EDT.

Respectfully submitted,

Art Goddard, W6XD
