Terms of Reference: The Industry Advisory Council (IAC) was proposed by the Long Range Planning Committee to provide an avenue for recommendations and concerns from industry to be presented to the ARRL Board of Directors. The IAC was authorized by Board action (minute 61, July 1992).
Highlights of Activity -- January 2002 to July 2002:
1) The IAC welcomed new member Ray Novak, KC7JPA, National Sales Manager for Icom America. The Council sincerely thanks Bob Brunkow, K7NHE, Icom Canada, for his service on the IAC.
2) The Council discussed the upcoming transition of automotive electrical systems to 42-Volt operation. A letter will be sent to JAIA requesting a study of standards for 42 V connectors for amateur mobile equipment. (Note, 42 volts is 3X the 14 volt systems we have today.)
3) Industry is concerned about emerging automotive EMC issues with mobile radios. The ARRL is urged to form liaisons with public safety and land mobile industry groups and remain active in automotive standards organizations to mitigate unfavorable trends.
4) Results of an informal test placement of ARRL "New Horizons" brochures in a retail radio store were discussed. Industry recommends these brochures be placed in all walk-in retail Amateur Radio stores. A recently formed industry group, the American Association of Radio Enthusiasts (AARE), is preparing an Amateur Radio brochure targeted at adjacent market areas such as general aviation, boating and FRS. The brochure may be placed in 7200 Radio Shack stores later this year.
5) A strong fulfillment effort is needed to convert new leads into licensed amateurs (and ARRL members). Industry recommends that the ARRL review its process for matchmaking between interested people and instructors/VE teams. Industry will encourage retail outlets to conduct introductory seminars and classes.
6) Industry recommends that ARRL establish guidelines for vendor exhibit hours based upon overall attendance and other factors. Furthermore, industry requests that ARRL review its procedure for sanctioning conventions to better avoid having two major events on the same weekend.
Respectfully
submitted,
Art Goddard W6XD
IAC Chairman
