Terms of Reference: The Industry Advisory Council (IAC) was proposed by the Long Range Planning Committee to provide an avenue for recommendations and concerns from industry to be presented to the ARRL Board of Directors. The IAC was authorized by Board action (minute 61, July 1992).
Highlights of Activity -- July 2002 to January 2003:
1) The IAC welcomed new member Eric Swartz, WA6HHQ, Co-Founder and COO of Elecraft LLC.
2) Industry is supportive of the standardized Application Programming Interface (API) initiative being pursued by ARRL's Software Defined Radio Working Group (SDRWG). Industry recommends that the API initiative consider existing hardware-based radios as well as SDRs. Industry encourages ARRL to form liaisons on an international scale to advance the wide acceptance of standards in Amateur Radio.
3) IAC members are requested to forward field experience and complaints on vehicular EMC to the ARRL Lab. ARRL, in turn, will use the information informally with automotive industry reps, and as appropriate, in SAE Automotive EMC committee activities. Informal contacts are often the most effective, as there are no quantitative standards for vehicular EMC, only "good engineering practice".
4) Industry recommends ARRL re-look at its organization and process for converting new leads into licensed amateurs. Although the Worldwide Web has largely replaced the mailing of information packets, industry recommends that sufficient information be collected to permit follow up. This is a possible area of cooperation with the American Association of Radio Enthusiasts (AARE).
5) IAC members recommend that ARRL form liaisons with their counterpart organizations, especially in Japan and Europe, to better address issues of equipment standardization and overall growth of the Amateur Radio service.
