Class Information

Classes meet over two sessions (Saturday & Sunday) and will cover all of the information needed to pass your FCC Amateur Radio Technician Class license exam.

Class Sessions

We will be meeting Saturday from 9 am to 6 pm and Sunday from 9 am to 5 pm. This time includes your license exam on Sunday afternoon.

Materials

I use the Gordon West Technician Class book as the student manual and study guide. Each student is responsible for obtaining this manual BEFORE the class begins. Since this is a two day class, with lots of material to cover, students are expected to read the entire manual before the class begins.

Make notes on any questions you may have as you read through the manual so we can go over them during the class as needed. The manual is NOT included in the class fee.

Links for purchase of the manual online:
Amazon

Stores that sometimes have copies in stock:
HSC Electronic Supply (Sunnyvale)
Ham Radio Outlet (Sunnyvale)

Exams

An ARRL Volunteer Examiner team will be there Sunday afternoon to provide the license examinations.

The $15 ARRL-VEC testing fee is NOT included with the class. Please be sure to have $15 exact change, in cash, on Sunday.

The VE team does NOT accept credit or debit cards of any kind.

Please DO NOT include the examination fee with your registration.

The Small Print

Each class requires a minimum of 6 students enrolled for it to take place. The minimum number of students must be preregistered at least 5 days before the start date of a class (by 5 pm the Monday before the first day of class) or the class will be canceled.

If the number of registrations drops below the minimum due to student cancellations BEFORE the Monday before class, it may be canceled.

In the event of a class cancellation all student enrollments will be refunded.

Student cancellations AFTER 5 pm the Monday before class will NOT be refunded. Student cancellations the Monday before class BEFORE 5 pm, or earlier, will be refunded.

Enrollment

To enroll in the class, please PayPal the class fee ($35 per person) to jon@kk6gxg.com and be sure to include your full name and which class you are registering for. Also include your FRN number if you have one. (see The FCC section below for more details on FRN numbers)

If I have not received your payment, you are not registered. I will send you a confirmation of registration within 24 hours of receiving payment.

I do not accept checks as payment for classes.

If you have any questions please email me at jon@kk6gxg.com

The FCC

Along with registering for the class, I highly recommend creating your account with the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) on the Commission Registration System site (CORES) before registering. Once you have set up your account you will be given your FCC Registration Number (FRN). This process is free and you get your FRN right then and there. The process only takes a couple of minutes.

Your FRN is used on the Amateur Radio license application (Form 605) and having it before you take your license exam speeds up the process. You will also need your FRN to log into the Universal Licensing System (ULS) and find out what your new call sign is after passing your exam.

Without an FRN you will need to use your Social Security number on the Form 605 license application.

Your Instructor

You will find more information about the amateur radio licensing process on my website, KK6GXG.com. This is also a good place to find out a little more about your instructor.

Thank you for choosing me as your instructor for this step of your journey in the amazing world of Amateur Radio. Please feel free to email me with any questions you may have.

73,
~Jon KK6GXG
