The Troy Amateur Radio Association was founded in April of 1991 and became affiliated with the ARRL in the same year. In 1994, the club applied for and was granted status as a not for profit organization as described under section 501©(3) of the Internal Revenue Code. In the year 2000, the club applied for and was granted status as an ARRL special service club. The club was founded on the principle that amateur radio is both a hobby to enjoy and an important adjunct to governmental and other non- profit institutions as a provider of public service and emergency communications. Every year the club provides communications for a variety of events, including the annual "Pumpkin Patrol", the annual "Run For Hunger", and the annual "Arsenal City Run".
The club has sponsored a variety of on the air and off the air activities, including an impressive Field Day effort every year, beginning in 1991. The club also sponsors a variety of nets including "Skywarn" weather nets, "digital get togethers" and the regionally popular "TNT Trader Net" every Thursday at 9 PM. The Trader Net is the venue for the annual "Handi-Hams" promotion. Each December stations checking into the net pledge contributions to this very worthwhile organization. The Troy Amateur Radio Association has raised more than $3,000 since this annual event started in 1995.

The club realizes that amateur radio can survive only if new licensees are brought into the hobby. Since its inception, the club has offered educational programs designed to train and license new operators. Periodically, the club offers such training courses at area high schools. The sessions typically end with an ARRL VEC sponsored test session. The club also jointly sponsors VE sessions with the Albany Amateur Radio Association. Founded in 1984,The "Albany Troy Volunteer Examiner Team" (ATVET) is one of the oldest volunteer examiner groups in the country The club is also a supplier of ARRL technical and educational publications.
Fully cognizant of the fact that we live in a "digital age" The Troy Amateur Radio Association sponsors the now world famous "TARA RTTY SPRINT". The ninth annual RTTY sprint was held on December 2nd and 3rd , 2000. Hundreds of stations around the globe participated in this well known "tune up" for the ARRL RTTY Roundup. The club also sponsored the world's first PSK-31 contest in October, 1999.
The club officially entered the "Internet Age" in 1996 with the introduction of its web page located at http://www.n2ty.org. The sites boast lots of references to other amateur sites as well as news of club activities. It also makes extensive use of "E-Groups."

The Troy Amateur Radio Association is an organization which has thrived in a rapidly changing world by constantly looking at the communications horizon. That horizon poses both opportunities and challenges. To meet those challenges and exploit those opportunities the club will continue to promote amateur radio as a fun hobby, public service opportunity and important educational adjunct to the technical world in which we live.
