This week, visit some web sites to get you ready for Field Day.
K6RIX's Southern California Field Day site helps hams find Field Day locations in the lower left coast of the USA. |
Field Day is arguably the biggest Amateur Radio event of the year. To participate, don't make any plans for the weekend of June 24-26 unless they are related to remote radio operations. Also, do not pass go, do not collect $200; instead, go directly to the ARRL's Field Day Web page and gather up all the information you need to join the Field Day frenzy.
Dino Darling, K6RIX, built the Southern California Field Day sites to assist Field Day operators, especially for folks located in Southern California. Dino wrote, "I love Field Day and we need to get more people out to the sites!" With that goal in mind, Dino's Web site provides information regarding the various Field Day sites in the Los Angeles, Orange, San Diego and Santa Barbara ARRL sections in Southern California.
In addition to textual information about each Field Day site, Dino also provided a "click for map" link so that you can view a MapQuest map of the selected site. Even better, Dino provides a link that permits you to download a KMZ (keyhole markup language, zipped) file for use with Google Earth. This allows you to zoom into the different Field Day sites from outer space, as well as see all the sites displayed on the map.
Dino says, "It's WAY cool!" and after trying it out, I must agree. You must have Google Earth installed on your computer in order to use this feature; it's a free download, so try it out.
Last week, I spent a lot of time cleaning up the Surfin' Index fixing HTML code, correcting errors, adding entries that slipped through the cracks and so on. Check it out, use it and if you notice anything wrong, please let me know so I can fix the problem.
Until next time, keep on surfin'.
Editor's note: Stan Horzepa, WA1LOU, is currently looking for a field for the last weekend in June (Fenway Park is tied up). To discuss Field Day, fields, days and just about anything else, e-mail Stan or add comments to his blog.
