    Surfin': It’s Contesting Time!

    By Stan Horzepa, WA1LOU

    October 12, 2007

This week, cooler weather means that the hotly contested quests for QSOs and multipliers begin.

K9JY’s 30 Ham Radio Contesting Tips is a good place to begin preparations for the upcoming Amateur Radio contest season.

Here up on Compounce Mountain these days, the leaves are falling and the snow is not far behind, so it must be time to nail down my antenna options and get ready for the ham radio contesting season.

Scot Herrick, K9JY, has a blog called K9JY Ham Radio. In September, he challenged himself to post on his blog “one ham radio contesting tip a day to kick off the fall contesting season.”

Thirty days later, Scot completed the challenge and he compiled his 30 Ham Radio Contesting Tips for all to read in one convenient place.

Meanwhile, over at Contesting Online, the season to contend in the “Sport of Amateur Radio” never ends. If you are new to contesting, there is a fine selection of articles under the “New to Contesting?” theme that will familiarize you with the art of ham radio contesting.

And, if you are a seasoned contester, you will find lots of useful information at Contesting Online, too. For example, a link called This Week’s Contests lists all the ham radio competition for the current week (courtesy of Bruce Horn, WA7BNM); meanwhile, an intriguing article attempts to answer the question “How much does a QSO cost?”.

Good luck, good DX, and until next time, keep on surfin’.

Editor’s note: Stan Horzepa, WA1LOU, won a contest once, but he kept his day job anyway. To communicate with Stan, send him e-mail or add comments to his blog. By the way, every installment of Surfin’ is indexed here, so go look it up.
