NEWINGTON, CT, Apr 26, 2003--The sixth annual CQ magazine National Foxhunting Weekend (NFW) will be May 10-11. ARRL Amateur Radio Direction Finding Coordinator Joe Moell, K0OV, says the event is a tuneup for the national ARDF championships this summer.
"There are no set transmitter hunting rules for the NFW, so your club can make up its own, in keeping with the skill level of the members," Moell said.
The National Foxhunting Weekend provides an opportunity for foxhunters from around the US to go on their favorite kind of RDF adventure, Moell explained. "It could be a mobile T-hunt, with one or more transmitters scattered around the city," he suggested. "Other hams prefer their foxhunting to be all on foot in a big park. They call it foxtailing, radio-orienteering or ARDF."
Moell notes that there's an internationally recognized set of rules for this kind of hunt, which takes place in about 30 countries around the world. US hams will host competitors from some of these countries at the second International Amateur Radio Region 2 (and third US) ARDF Championships near Cincinnati, Ohio. The event gets under way July 31 and continues through August 3.
Competitors for
the Region 2/US Championships must register by July 12. More information about
foxhunting, equipment and the NFW--including report forms--can be found on
Moell's Homing In Web site.
