2005 ARRL Field Day
Field Day was great fun this year with excellent participation at our public site at the Woodley Island Marina, Eureka, CA. The best measure of success is the number of people who got on the air this year: 11 on phone, 14 on the GOTA and 3 on CW. This is especially good since the objective of our club is to gain public awareness and to encourage people to become engaged in amateur radio. We really enjoyed the presence and assistance of a Civil Air Patrol group of cadets from Santa Rosa under the leadership of Captain Tony Hamill. ARRL just signed an agreement with the CAP at the Dayton Hamvention in May. Besides helping make a record number of contacts on the GOTA station, they were a great help in set-up and tear-down.
Our club got great media support getting the message out that we are here to help in time of an emergency. Thanks to the local newspaper, the Times-Standard, articles that highlighted the role of amateur radio in emergency communications were run in the paper three days in a row starting Saturday June 25. This included front page coverage and a profile of the club's emergency activities. Our ARRL SCM Bill Hillendahl KH6GJV and our club president, Marci Campbell KE6IAU made the top of the news hour on Channel 3 TV Sunday news. -- K6XG
