2007 ARRL November Sweepstakes (Phone)

11/29/2007 | N0NB SO LP KS

It had been several years since I last operated SS as part of a multi-op effort. I guess I was a bit burned out.

I started with the "normal" goal of working enough Q's for a PIN
and that morphed into "how many over 100 can I go?" My summary sheet shows 206 Q's (I quit because Wind Tunnel was about to come on :-) ) and 71 sections. Of the nine I didn't work I didn't hear AK, MB, and NWT and the others I heard in passing since I primarily worked S&P.

Saturday night on 75m was outstanding. I even worked VI with my low NVIS 80m doublet. I also worked PAC on 75m Sunday morning which has to be some sort of DX record for me. I tried a couple of runs on 75m, but even though I worked over half of my Q's on 75m, apparently I didn't have enough of a signal to gain much attention.

I think that I most enjoy hearing the check numbers through the course of SS. This year I had the pleasure of working VE9CEH with a check of 07 and W8UM with a check of 13 (1913 and they don't get much earlier than that although 1912 would be the earliest possible in the USA). I hope that by 2012 the check is modified slightly (three digits?) so a check of 12 won't mean both 1912 and 2012 as it is neat to work the really old stations and know it when it happens.

Overall I could only work about 9 or 10 hours of SS and missed getting some of the rare mults on Sunday afternoon. As they say, "Wait 'til next year", although it remains to be seen if 75m will repeat 2007's grand performance. -- N0NB
