2010 ARRL August UHF Contest
The Southern California Contest Club rovers had another good contest. We had five new participants roving with us this time: K6B (WB6BFG), K6HTN, KJ6CNK, N6NC and N6UWW. Some had not done UHF+ contesting before, but they all learned quickly.
There were nine rovers together for much of the weekend as we visited six grid squares. Then two rovers (N6HC+N6NC and W6XD+K6HTN) remained on a hill near Tehachapi in DM05 while the rest of us visited three more grid squares. We proceeded across the San Joaquin Valley to sites more than 100 miles away in CM95, CM96 and DM06 to wrap up the contest, allowing some of the newcomers to see for the first time what microwave DXing across a large valley can be like.
We also had WB2WIK as a guest operator at my home station, operating on all bands through 10 GHz. Once again he had good success using knife-edge and reflective paths to work the rovers in mountainous areas and in the desert beyond the mountains. Steve ended up with one of the highest single operator low power scores in the country, an amazing thing for a Southern Californian operating in the flatlands with a mountain range rising up to the east only a mile away.
The 2010 UHF event was hard work--but fun.
