2011 ARRL January VHF Sweepstakes

01/24/2011 | NL7HJ/R

Two solutions to the January doldrums in Alaska: 1) hop an Alaska Airlines jet nonstop to Hawaii, or 2) work the VHF SS. No sunscreen required for Option 2! Another 1,100 mile rove, starting in Homer on Saturday morning. From there, worked Grids BP40, BP51 (KL6M in Anchorage), and BO37. Special thanks to Curt AL7LQ; he and Mike KL7JBV chained up for a 7 mile drive up a sheet of ice to activate Kodiak Island for the contest. Though it was 135+ miles over some big terrain, they made their 59 signals into Homer on 2m seem easy. Ed KL7UW, Tom NL7OW, and others with the Alaska VHF Up Group stayed with me all day as I drove up to Anchorage, activating another 5 grid squares. Left Anchorage for Talkeetna around 10pm, but instead of stopping, I drove home to Denali Park (250 miles). Woke up the next morning to minus 35 F. At those temps, parked tires go square, coax gets brittle, pvc snaps, and standing around trying to attach a 6m dipole and raise the mast starts to lose its charm. So I scaled back my planned sked up to Nenana and Fairbanks for a local drive, activating BP53 and BP54. Thanks to Larry (KL2R-Two Rivers Contest Club), who added BP64 for me on 2m & 6m. Thanks to Steve KL7FZ, Phil KL8DX, Dale KL7XJ, Mike KL6M, and the other KL7 hams who listened for me! It was fun, but next January, I’m going to Hawaii….
