2011 ARRL June VHF Contest

06/15/2011 | K0AWU

Overall the second highest VHF contest score I have recorded, due to the number of grids that were worked on 6m. It ended up being mostly a 6m contest since 6m was open almost the entire contest period. It was interesting that the grids were mostly into less populated areas which reduced the number of QSO  while allowing unusual grids to be logged. 6m was open on Saturday into the Caribbean and Central America as well as the western US and the southern states. For a 30min period, stations in Nebraska (K0HA)  and Kansas (N0LL) as well as others were worked, but no 2m Es were observed on the 2m SoftRock panadapter. Only briefly Sunday afternoon were the New England states workable.

Conditions above 6m seemed to be better Sunday than Saturday and 432 was better than 2 or 222 in several instances. No real long haul stations were worked, if that was a result of less activity (due to 6m) or conditions, I don't know.

I kinda came along "kicking and screaming" prefering to work "the weak stuff" other than 6m Es, but it was a fun contest anyway. The local weather was the best weekend we have had all spring. Bummer ....
