2011 ARRL June VHF Contest

06/19/2011 | K9AKS

This year I made a 700 mile trek to North Dakota to put EN07 on the air.  As usual, I operated QRP portable.  Thanks to Greg, W0BTW, for allowing me to operate on his property.  It is an excellent site, situated above a reservoir, with very good views to the north through southeast, and flat in other directions.

After a very slow start for the first four hours, six meters came alive and stayed alive for most of the contest.  The weather was not too bad on Saturday, but Sunday was a different story.  In the morning the wind was very strong from the east with periods of heavy horizontal rain.  The rain went away in the afternoon, but the wind was even stronger.  I had great difficulty holding the antennas in place all day.

Because of the wind and the good conditions on six, I did not do as well on the higher bands as I would have liked.  On six, I worked over 100 grids for the fourth year in a row (from Nebraska, South Dakota, Colorado, and now North Dakota).  Location, location, location.  The openings were very widespread, which helped the grid count.  Among my first 120 QSOs I worked 88 grids--a remarkable Q/G ratio.
