2011 ARRL Field Day
This time the Puerto Rico Field Day Group along with the Movimiento Radioaficionados de Puerto Rico was on the grounds of the Nuevo Gran Parque Agroecoturístico, Ecológico y Recreativo of the city of Dorado.
Mounting started after 10am with cables, radios, generator, everything almost ready for 2pm, even flood light for the night by Ramon Ernesto - KP4DH, except for two things: a tube and U-bolt was missing to mount the Mosley antenna on a tower, and a thunderstorm was looming. Any way we had an S7 vertical antenna ready.
But after 2pm, rain wind and thunder surrounded us! We tried to do some contacts, but the antenna balun was expose to water making a crackling noise on the radios, and even Rooney - KP4AYA's tent was almost torn down by the wind, not to mention the lightning that as falling. When I was watching around all the rain, I thought to myself :this is part of the game" . . . you never know if something like this will come on a station setup.
After the rain the antenna parts wer brought by Edgar - NP4EG and with the help of Alexis - WP3ZN and Uris - WP4NSY finished mounting the Mosley while Fernando - WP4KS went to dry the balun of the vertical Also the SM Roberto Jimenez - KP4AC also came to visit the site as well our friend Tony - KP4IA. And Rey - WP3HP was setting an NVIS military antenna to display
At 4:50 pm we started with the GOTA station WP4NPC with Enrique - WP4OIM, who recently got his Extra ticket at the age of 12, later was Nishit Murari - WP4OIG turn, and who made more contacts. Most of the contacts came from DX stations.
Later during the night we started to do the regular QSO with KP4FD, Edgar started with the vertical on 15 meters and later I followed, plus Alexis was cooking some ribs! At 8pm sent the message to the SM via 2m and the QSO were a little slow, but when the Mosley was conected to a FT-100 . . the stations were booming in creating a pileup! 15 meters was alive well into midnight, and then changed to 20 meters. Took a break to do PSK31 with 21 stations back to back contacted. Between Edgar and I we took turns on the radio.
The next day, we did a few contacts on 40m and later kept on 20 meters, with Fernando making some contacts this time making 3 to loose up a little. Also Enrique;s grandmother Ivonne - WP4OJF made her first HF contact via the GOTA station.
We want to thank Jorge Acevedo, assisstant to the mayor of the city of Dorado for letting us have Field Day in their new park, and dedicate it to Nishit, who learned of the passing of his mother during the night, and who had his first HF experience with the GOTA station. Til the next one de Angel Santana
