2011 ARRL Field Day

07/27/2011 | AA1PL

My friend Jeff, W1QL and I both enjoy operating from the great outdoors so this year we decided to enjoy field day together from the George Washington Management Area Campground in Glocester, RI.  Our operating location was inside  a very nice Adirondack style shelter. We operated as two completely independent stations, each with our own radios, antennas, logging computers, batteries, etc.  and we each used our own callsign.   We did this because I wanted to work as many stations as possible running  QRP using primarily CW, while Jeff wanted to focus on working as many ARRL sections as possible while running 50 to 100 watts on phone. It worked out well for us and we enjoyed it.  I ran my Icom 7000 at 5 watts using  3 different HF wire antennas and a 6 meter Moxon antenna.   Jeff used his Icom 7200, an OCF dipole and a vertical. As the official start time was approaching and I was plugging everything together at my operating position,  I realized I accidentally left my CW key at home, about an hour away !    As luck would have it, Al W1SNE who lives nearby heard of my misfortune on the .76 repeater and graciously allowed me to borrow his Bencher paddle.  Thank you Al !   Jeff and I were later informed by the park ranger  that we must vacate the campsite by 11 AM on Sunday because we only had the site reserved for Saturday night, checkout time is 11AM and there was another group coming in Sunday afternoon.  Therefore we had to start packing up around 9:30 AM. on Sunday.  We were QRT from about midnight to 7 AM for some shut-eye therefore we missed some significant operating time.  My QSO count was much lower than I had hoped but the fun I had more than made up for it.   I like to operate from different locations each Field Day and  I'm already thinking about possible locations for next year !  A  local hilltop?  An ocean-side location?  A mountaintop in Maine or NH?  Whatever it is, I can't wait until FD 2012 !
