2011 ARRL Field Day
An unusual year, record heat of 105, kept attendance at the outdoors Austin TX event below past years'. A 3A club effort was made with GOTA and VHF.
The lackluster conditions on 10m in our location, was not the norm 20 miles north per other area hams.
This was made up for, by a decade long record 6m opening producing 98 voice contacts! All on Saturday.
Daytime had high HF power line noise levels since this is a drought area, and insulators and poles are dry, dirty, and noisy. Evening had quieter band conditions, but by Sunday reopening of bands, on HF; there were not the conditions seen Sat., and QSO rates plummeted.
More operators could have been used. More heat tolerant hams too!
A great dinner was served on Sat. by K5EJL, Joe Fisher, to an appreciative party who enjoyed Brisket, sausage, chicken, and ribs BBQ and sides.
The HSMM Mesh Network worked flawlessly for networking the HF stations in mesh nodes for logging. No glitches due to self healing HSMM mesh.(tm). Thanks to Dave Rivenberg, AD5OO HSMM guru in chief.
Workhorse bands were 6, 15, 20, & 40, with voice contacts outdistancing digital modes.
Our educational activity was conducted by Bob Morgan, WB5AOH, who set up and educated us on working NVIS by both the Extaordinary Wave and the Ordinary Wave, by use of two crossed dipoles and phasing hardware.
We are ever grateful to the American Red Cross chapter for hosting us on their grounds under Disaster Director Jose Dominguez, our visiting official.
