2011 ARRL August UHF Contest

08/08/2011 | N6ZE/R

I operated as a Limited Rover from CN87 & CN88 locations on Whidbey Island, WA during the Aug. UHF Contest.

On Sunday morning, I heard KW7Yat less than 20 miles distant transmitting a 70 Cm LSB signal which kept moving slightly up and down the band. After 2 calls he answered; he did not know that the ARRL August UHF Contest was in progress. I was really surprised when he said that my 2 meter signal strength was very strong and much louder than on 70 Cm! Finally, Paul told me that I had unwittingly heard him on the Mode "B" OSCAR -7 satellite input! I then used my 2m rig to hear my strong 2m signal transmitted from AO-7 and made a legitimate 2-way Satellite QSO with KW7Y through the elderly 'bird'! Then we 'properly' made a 2 way contact on 70 Cm for Contest credit.

I made just over 50 QSOs from my 2 activated grids on the 2 bands; I worked about 13 grids total.

Best 70 CM DX was an SSB QSO with W7EME (CN87tw - CN85be) at a distance of 205 miles with a mountainous path between us.

I used a simple pair of transceivers for 222 MHz and 70 Cm bands: a Kenwood FM transceiver and 5 element 'VJB yagi' for 222 MHz joined by an FT857 and 11 element M>2 yagi for 70 Cm SSB/CW/FM
