2012 ARRL Straight Key Night
For SKN this year I decided to use my DX-100-B instead of my other early Heathkit rigs: ( AT-1 and DX-60-B). That coupled with my equally vintage Hammarlund HQ-150 made for a representative station of the mid-50's. But, little did I know that I would be giving listeners a fine example of what a vintage rig actually sounded like! I did notice it initially a bit in my receiver, but didn't give it any thought until my first QSO received a report of a "slight chirp". Joe, W9JUV, said he kind of enjoyed hearing this unique keying anomaly and said it would be an asset in breaking a pile-up! I never thought of that. Other QSOs were with W1YT, Ed, W1FMR, Jim, WA2DTW, Steve, and WA1AR, Alan. I worked only 80 meters and conditions were quite good throughout early Saturday evening and Sunday afternoon. The below pictures show my station and the array of keying devices I regularly use. Now I wonder: should I pursue trying to find the cause of the apparent "chirp" in my DX-100-B's keying or let it remain as a sound of Ham Radio's past? Tune me in next year for the answer.
