2012 ARRL International DX Contest (Phone)
No matter what kind of conditions, the ARRL DX Phone contest is always a winner. I intended to operate QRP and had checked and doubled checked everything. Again, Ol Man Sol spun out some CME and my noise floor went through the roof – so I regrouped and after a lot of hours without a contact, I found 10 meters open to the South America. I made a good number of contacts but I had to move the power up to the low power category to make the QSOs. I am curious what kind of propagation we had on 10 that day, at least from 4 –land in VA. Several XE and TI stations were S9 on the east coat with a big following but they did not have reciprocal propagation so, they cycled through many CQs before working a station – typically in the Midwest. QSB was rapid and deep nulls occurred within roughly 30 seconds of making a lot of contacts. This was very noticeable during trans-equatorial QSOs. Absolutely no EU stations were heard from my QTH but I did work 3 African DX stations that faded in and out within minutes of working them. Not to mention the high and variable noise levels. So anyhow – blame UFOs? – doubt it – major Solar Flares – never happen… but it was a real rollercoaster ride on 10 and very enjoyable. The conditions seemed to change minute by minute which made the challenge all the more fun. 73
