2012 ARRL School Club Roundup - February
W7O at Oakview Elementary School, Centralia WA had a tremendous first ever School club round up event. We contacted 20 states officially (21 unofficially) operating for a little over 22 hours. We had at last count 250 students participate over the week of SCR. This equates to roughly half of the student population at the school.
This event has quite a few students excited about amateur radio, I am asked everytime by the students when I am at the school when we are going to do more radio activities! I am now working on setting up a Technician License class for the students who wish to get more involved.
Here is a write up from the teacher's bulletin about my participation in the school and the SCR. I am a Master's in Education student and at the conclusion of SCR I was told by the principal I was approved to do my student teaching there in the fall,
From the Oakview Weekly Update Feb 27-Mar 2, 2012 Applause, Applause! Many thanks and much applause go to super volunteer Donn Gallon Donn has logged countless hours at Oakview leading a wide-range of supportive activities including practicum studies, volunteer teaching, tutoring and mentoring. Most recently Donn shared his time and skills in a full-week amateur radio residency for our students. This opportunity produced many school-wide, classroom and individual student successes. Most notably, this experience provided a spark of learning excitement for specific students like nothing else has! Mr. Gallon, for your time, commitment and caring .... Thanks! FYI Oakview has the go ahead by the principal to operate in the Oct SCR. Expect Centralia Middle School to operate if they get aham volunteer or several students licensed before then. A few students who are 6th graders and moving up to Middle School were unhappy that they were going to miss the next Oakview SCR.-- K7LOP
