2012 ARRL June VHF Contest
I headed out the door around 4:30am on Sunday to make the trek northwest to Big Mountain in Pennsylvania. I arrived at the site just before 6am in time to watch the sunrise. The weather on the mountain was cool and breezy, which was nice for setup. I was operating by 7:23am and immediately made a contact in Spain on 6m. Europe quickly died out and I switched over to 2m for a while. I ran into some problems with my tiny generator keeping up with the 170 watt 2m amp, so I had to pause to install a power cable that allowed me to run the radios off of the truck battery. The home-built G0KSC-designed 6m and 2m LFA yagis performed well. After bouncing back and forth between the two bands for a while, 2m slowed so I jumped over to 6m to find an opening into the upper mid-west. I was able to make contacts out to western Nebraska without much effort. When I switched over to 2m right at the end of my four hour operating window, things were pretty dead. It was apparent that everyone was taking advantage of the 6m opening.
During the 3.5+ hours of operating I was able to get 33 QSOs in 22 grids on 6m and 24 QSOs in 15 grids for 2m.
