2012 ARRL Field Day

07/02/2012 | N4FD

Field Day 2012 for N4FD was relaxed, social, and almost a non-event.  At the last minute, Phil, W3HZZ, and Jeff, K8CQ, decided to set up a 1B temporary station on Phil's back deck overlooking Bloody Marsh on St Simons Island, GA.  Bloody Marsh is the site of an important battle fought in 1742 by General James Olglethorpe's British troops against Spanish forces.  But we digress ... We used the call N4FD because Larry gave us permission, and as he said, it has been used in every FD event since the middle '70s.  Larry was taking care of his wife after some recent surgery and unavailable to operate.  Phil had a brand new K2 to test out.  Using it running 5 watts with a battery and a vertical antenna mounted to a stake in the ground along the edge of the marsh, we made 36 contacts in 30 sections on 20m CW over a two-hour period.  We worked KP4, a couple of Canadian sections and several sections along the West Coast.  Almost every station we called responded on the first or second call.  Only rarely did we not get the stations we tried calling.  Our operation was quite leisurely, enjoying a couple of beers as we soaked in the view across the marsh.  It was a lot of fun.  We shut down around 5 p.m. local time.  It was good that we did because a short time later the rain from tropical storm Debby came through the area and we received lots of rain, buckets of rain, and as one of my relatives used to say, it was raining "pigs and horses" ... and that's a whole lot worse than "cats and dogs."  We'll be looking for you next year.  Have fun in the chase and very 73.  And by the way, Jeff's ARRL FD hat was embroidered with his callsign K8CQ at a local shop in Brunswick, GA.  They matched the font and the thread exactly.  It looks great and has received lots of nice comments.  Jeff, K8CQ, and Phil, W3HZZ.
