2012 ARRL November Sweepstakes (CW)
I've been operating this contest, on and off (more on than off) since 1973 and I think this one was the most fun I've had.
Previous years I've used yagis, quads, verticals and dipoles up to 45-50 feet high. In those years, I've done reasonably well for the time I've put into operating. The past few have been extremely different.
Having moved in 2011 to an over 55 community, my operation was 'supposed to be' completely restricted. So the decision was made to operate covertly. It started with experimenting with attic antennas with moderate results. Then, forced to move due to some unforeseen financial problems encountered by the landlord / owner, we were forced to move again. This gave me a chance to rethink the antenna situation.
I opted for a short G5RV and stuck it in the attic of the new digs. Results were on the order of "the jury is still out". At least until this weekend.
With a bit more time to operate, I put 306 Q's in the log in 60 of the 83 (?) sections -- I've never done more than about 50-55 over all the years since 1973! Could have done more, but there was some running around that needed to be completed and I was elected.
Had a run on 40 meters that lasted a good hour and twenty minutes after tuning and pouncing for the better part of the contest. I'd almost forgot what it was like to just continue to pound out Q's for more than a short window.
Submitted in excess of 42k points for the effort. The effort was minimal compared to fun I had. It was also a great relief from the stress put on everyone in the area following Hurricane Sandy coming on shore in the center of our state and making a horrendous wreck of so much and affecting so many.
Contest logs added to my station log, station logs updated on LoTW and e-QSL, cabrillo log prepared and submitted to the League. All necessary paperwork completed.
Can't wait for the next CW session.
