2013 ARRL International DX Contest (CW)

02/25/2013 | KC2TA

Interesting.  Very interesting.

Running a contest at 100 watts using stealth (attic) antennas can be frustrating.  I can receive relatively well, and with the filters on the TS-2000 can eliminate much of the surrounding trash.  Unfortunately, it is much more difficult being H-E-A-R-D!

During the contest, realizing that I wasn't going to obtain many Q's calling CQ, let alone hold a frequency, I was dedicated to the "hunt and pounce" method of operating.  Surprisingly, it worked out fairly well with over 300 Q's in the log and another four or five new countries to the total, including additional "band countries".

Friday night was not stellar by any stretch -- was unable to break very many pileups.  The KW's and yagis were too much to fight on the first night.  Plus, with a normal wake up call of 0400, it's tough to stay awake much beyond 2200 local time.  The mind just wasn't clicking on all of it's cylinders, which for the last 1/2 hour or so was ONE!

Ah, but the DX gods are an interesting sort.  Worked KH6 and ZL on 40 meters Saturday.  3V is in the log on 15 & 10 -- a real surprise since I'd been trying to break through during the past few weeks without luck.

No, I won't be testing the gods again during the SSB portion -- don't have luck -- other than bad -- contesting in that mode.  I'll wait for the other CW affairs and try to work out some new antenna plans to aid in signal prowess.

Maybe next year...
