2013 ARRL Field Day
Field started several weeks in advance by checking out computers to make sure nothing had gone wrong since 2012 after a year long storage. Since Canada added new sections 5 computers had to be updated to the newest logging software. All the computers worked well from 2012 except one so that one was replaced. Nearly everything that is stored worked without a hitch. We met at Lowndes Civil War Park, our Field Day location,. to set up shelters and antennas. When the majority of members arrived at 4PM NW8U, KC8RIQ, and KC8RIP had arrived and already had put up the 45 foot tower with a tribander. After our arrival another shelter was put up and the 80 Mtr dipole was put in place. The temperature was in the high 80s and the heat made things go a little slower. After the evening’s work was completed we went home to return on Saturday. We met at 10 AM with all of the other gear to complete the installing of all the gear need to operate. Everything went smoothly with installation of equipment. Of course, the operating started at the strike of 2PM. Things were running smoothly until something happened with the CW station being operated by NW8U and KV8S. Their computer was not talking to the network. Trying to find out what was the problem the CW station had logged several contacts so it was decided that I would let the CW operators continue logging independent of the network. I planned to merge the CW and Phone contacts before reporting them to ARRL. The remaining three computers operated without a hitch for the remainder of Field Day. We were visited during the day with 43 registered guests. Door prizes were given away with a drawing each 15 minutes during the day. The CW and two phone stations were manned by members of SJARA and visiting Amateur Operators. The GOTA station was manned mostly by two CAP cadets with KA5NYN as the coach. We had one technician KD8UTT also sitting at the GOTA station give her the experience of operation on the HF bands. When evening came we had an outstanding dinner consisting of smoked port and turkey prepared by KD8HOF, KD8GKQ, with other family members and friends. Others also brought covered dishes. Operations continued during the night into Sunday, with no problems of any kind. After Field Day became to a close as 2PM everything was done in reverse and everything was packed away awaiting the possibility of a future emergency or until 2014 when it starts over again. After things were all packed, the area was checked and cleaned so we left the park clean as we found it. We drew tickets for the raffle. A VHF/UHF HT was won by NR8X, an emergency battery pack for charging cell phones and other small devices was won by N8FXH and the NOAA Emergency Radio was won by Bill Frazzini.
